The rise of QDs in the display industry

Dec 21, 2021

SID just released the latest issue of Information Display for 2021 and quantum dots are featured front to back. The presence of QDs in the display industry has never been as prevalent as it is now. Most display brands are adopting this technology to enhance their products. In addition to today’s application in LCDs, quantum dots are also helping to solve challenges for other display technologies such as OLED and microLED. The importance of QDs go beyond making today’s displays brighter, they’re also a key player in revolutionizing future technology.

Bob Raikes writing for SID Information Display:

“The big news from [Jason] Hartlove was that the firm’s new air-stable QDs can be included into extruded light-guide plates. That will bring the cost of adding QDs down to just $10, while consumers will pay more for QD-enabled TVs, so margins will be better. Conversely, 8K costs more for panel makers than users. He also forecast good markets for microLEDs using QDs, which is the reason for buying the microLED maker glo. To be competitive, microLEDs must be extremely small, and that is a challenge with native red LEDs, but QD color conversion can overcome this.“
