Quantum dots: Not just a marketing buzzword

Quantum dots might not be visible to the human eye, but they are real. At 2-8 nanometers in diameter, these tiny man-made crystals behave as semiconductors: they emit energy in the form of light when excited by either light or electricity. There are trillions of these tiny crystals inside each quantum dot display.

Unique color fine-tuning ability

When a quantum dot absorbs a photon, it generates an electron-hole pair that recombines to emit a new photon. In other light-emitting materials, the wavelength of the emitted photon is a fixed property of the material and not affected by its dimensions. Because the energy structure of a quantum dot changes depending on its size, we don’t need to find a different set of materials to generate different colors of lights, we simply change the size of the quantum dots.

Crucially, the color of this emitted photon depends on the size of the quantum dot: Bigger dots emit longer wavelengths, close to red (620 to 750 nm); smaller dots emit shorter wavelengths, closer to the blue end (440 to 470 nm) of the spectrum.

The best quality quantum dot particles

To create a quantum dot with a controlled size, which determines the emission peak wavelength, we adjust the temperatures and the timing of the chemical reactions used in our automated production line.

Our proprietary manufacturing technology produces Nanosys quantum dots that guarantee the highest brightness output and a sharp color spectrum.

LED and White OLED displays lead to wasted energy

Did you know that less than 5 out of every 100 photons generated by a conventional LCD or White OLED display is perceptible by your eye? These antiquated display technologies rely on a blue and yellow light source that is mismatched to the color filters. This approach causes most of the energy from the yellow light source to be wasted, and leads to muddy, inaccurate green and red color primaries.

Quantum dots produce pure color, without the waste

Nanosys quantum dots create a perfectly tuned spectrum of light with exactly the right red, green, and blue that the display needs for accurate, lifelike color reproduction with high brightness.
