Sky UK Launches Subscription Model for Quantum Dot TVs
Sky TV, the UK's largest pay-TV broadcaster with nearly 13 million customers as of 2020, just launched a compelling new product. If you’re thinking it’s a new satellite dish or channel package, think again. It’s a Quantum Dot TV.
They call it Sky Glass. It delivers seriously premium experience with 4K HDR, Quantum Dots and DolbyVision with Atmos from a killer six-driver built-in sound system.
For around $100/month Sky UK subscribers get a 65” Sky Glass TV, a full featured streaming-only (no cable box) channel bundle with premium channels and Netflix. They also get to pick from 5 unique colors for the TV set and matching remote.
Aside from great picture and content options, the new sets also promise some new UI experiences. According to Steve May and Mark Craven, writing for Home Cinema Choice:
“…what's perhaps most interesting about Sky Glass is its new UI. In addition to tricks that are specific to its mashup of hardware and software – such as Glance Motion Technology that turns the set on just by looking at it (apparently – we wonder if it will also work with pets), plus far-field voice control – the Sky Glass menus fully integrate third party apps/catchup and Sky content into a new environment. There's also a new personal Playlist tool. Perhaps a tweaked version of this platform will rollout to Sky Q hardware soon.'“
