Roundup: SID Display Week's Quantum Dot Keynotes
July 17, 2024
The 2024 SID Display Week show featured a ton of Quantum Dot news, including some of the world’s first QDEL display demonstrations and breakthroughs in blue QDEl lifetime. There were also several great keynote talks, all with a Quantum Dots connection: from a QD Nobel Laureate to Nanosys’ former CEO to the CEO of a leading QDTV brand to a startup founder creating new QD markets.
It was an amazing week for Quantum Dots and the SID has graciously shared each of these talks on their YouTube channel. We’ll share them here in order of appearance at the show, starting with Professor Bawendi’s lecture on his groundbreaking QD work and Nobel Prize experience. Prof. Bawendi, an early Nanosys advisor, is a true QD pioneer:
Next up, former Nanosys CEO and current Vice President of Display at Meta, Jason Hartlove, took the stage to share his perspective on the opportunities and challenges for displays in AR and MR. While not a talk explicitly about quantum dots, Hartlove outlined some clear opportunities for QDs, such as his plea for better, brighter reds from the display industry:
The closing presenter for the Display Week 2024 keynote session was Jun Zhao, CEO of TCL. TCL is one of the world’s leading consumer electronics companies and a major quantum dot TV powerhouse. To this day, TCL is the only company that has never shipped a WOLED set in any market we are aware of. These guys are true RGB QD! In his presentation, Jun lays out an exciting vision for an ink-jet printed display future. He also challenges the industry to deliver a commercial-ready blue QD for QDEL displays with a $1 million bounty program!
Artist and entrepreneur Olga Alexopoulou presented the SID Awards Luncheon keynote on Thursday of Display Week. Olga’s talk is a fascinating look at the history of color and pigments from the earliest cave painters to a future where artists may “paint with light” using quantum dots. Her startup, Quantum Light, is exploring using Quantum Dots as a pigment for everything from paints to fashion and more. It’s an exciting future application of quantum dots outside of displays!
