Quantum Dot Displays Take Off
Jun 29, 2021
EU-based in-flight entertainment and avionics leader Thales is bringing Quantum Dot displays to the friendly skies.
Stephanie Taylor, writing for Apex:
Thales developed the centrepiece of its new offering, its Optiq displays, in partnership with Harman, a leader in the automotive infotainment space that’s wholly owned by Samsung…
On choosing QLED technology rather than OLED, which is the other major premium TV panel technology, Rhoads explained, “QLED doesn’t have burn-in characteristics, which is very important in the cabin environment where the displays show a welcome screen while passengers are boarding. That won’t leave a ghost image over your movie.”
According to Apex, Thales already has a contract with at least one wide-body aircraft manufacturer and the new Quantum Dot screens will be found on jets entering service in 2023. The company is also offering Quantum Dot displays for retrofits of existing planes so the displays may be coming to one of your next flights!
