QDEF Brings Lifelike Color to LCDs

Palo Alto, Calif., June 5, 2012 – Nanosys, Inc., an advanced materials architect, today received the 2012 Display Industry Awards Gold Display Component of the Year for its Quantum Dot Enhancement Film (QDEF) from the Society for Information Display (SID).

The Display Industry Awards recognize innovative display products, components, and applications that hold the most promise for shaping the future of the global display industry.  The Display Industry Awards are awarded each year with Gold and Silver honors in three categories: Display of the Year, Display Application of the Year, and Display Component of the Year.

“Color performance is the next major differentiator in the display market. The screen is the entry point to the digital world. Bringing true to life color to our devices will create a more immersive, lifelike user experience,” said Jason Hartlove, president and CEO of Nanosys. “This award from the Society for Information Display recognizes the hard work of many talented people at Nanosys to develop an innovative display technology.”

The 2012 Display Industry Awards will be presented to the winners at the Symposium Luncheon on Wednesday, June 6, 2012, during Display Week 2012: The SID Annual International Symposium, Seminar and Exhibition in Boston, Mass.

“The SID Display Industry Awards recognize significant advances made by the international display industry over the past year in bringing new and innovative products to the market," noted Robert Melcher, SID’s Display Industry Awards Committee Chairman. “Numerous high-quality nominations were received this year from around the world, demonstrating the continued success of the industry in providing products and technologies to serve the display needs of consumers and professionals alike. We are proud to award Nanosys the 2012 Gold Display Component of the Year Honor for its Quantum Dot Enhancement Film.  We commend the company’s ongoing commitment to innovation and to helping shape the future of display performance and solutions.”

A quantum dot, which is 10,000 times smaller than the width of a human hair, can emit any color of light at a very precise wavelength.  The ability to control the spectral output of a quantum dot allows QDEF to create an ideal white backlight specifically designed for LCDs. Trillions of these quantum dots are packaged into a thin film that fits inside of an LCD backlight unit.  QDEF replaces a similar film already found inside of the LCD backlight, which means that adding QDEF to the manufacturing processes requires no new equipment or process changes for the LCD manufacturer.
