Nanosys, RealD and Samsung Recognized as Standout Exhibitor Products and Technologies
CAMPBELL, Calif., May 18, 2011-- The Society for Information Display (SID), the leading global organization dedicated to the advancement of electronic display technology, today announced the winners of the first-ever Display Week Best in Show awards. These awards were created to highlight the most significant new products and technologies showcased on the exhibit floor during the 49th annual SID International Symposium, Seminar and Exhibition, currently underway this week at the Los Angeles Convention Center. The Best in Show awards are being presented today during the annual SID luncheon at Display Week 2011, where the winners of the venerable Display of the Year awards are also being honored.
Open to all exhibitors on the show floor during Display Week 2011, the prizes were awarded to the following companies: Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., RealD and Nanosys. Selected by an independent panel of display experts, the winners were chosen for the significance of their development and/or product and for their ability to generate excitement within not only the display industry, but also the general public and the media.
According to Robert Melcher, chairman of the SID Best in Show committee, "The Display Week exhibition has frequently served as the first showcase for product developments and technological innovations that have turned out to be extremely significant for the display industry. We felt it was important to create not only a means to showcase such exciting developments upon their Display Week debut, but also an additional opportunity to recognize the incredible range of noteworthy innovations exhibited on the actual show floor."
About The Winners
Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. (Booth #707) received the Best in Show Award in the Large Exhibit Category for the world's first prototype 70-inch ultra-definition 240Hz 2D-3D panel. Key features include: oxide TFT backplane technology; UD (3840 x 2160) resolution and a 240Hz refresh rate; and immersive 3D images of UD resolution with use of active shutter glasses.
RealD (Booth #512) received the Best in Show Award in the Medium Exhibit Category for its RDZ 3D displays. RDZ 3D displays are first-of-their-kind LCD-based displays that deliver full-resolution HD 3D images utilizing the same passive 3D glasses used in movie theatres around the world and do not degrade 2D image quality. These displays are based on RealD's award-winning 3D cinema projection technology—the world's most widely used 3D projection technology.
Nanosys (Booth #759) received the Best in Show Award in the Small Exhibit Category for its display comparison demonstration that compares a 47" QDEF™ Quantum Dot enabled display (over 100% NTSC gamut) against a standard TV (sRGB). This revolutionary technology allows LCD manufacturers to accurately match their LED backlight to their LCD color filters to achieve the best possible color and efficiency performance.
SID's Best in Show award qualifications include prototypes and manufacturing processes, as well as products, but are only awarded to Display Week exhibitors. The criteria used by the committee members to evaluate the exhibit material included: timeliness and significance to the display industry among the products, prototypes, processes, and technologies exhibited; and creative use of audio, visual or other effects to present and highlight the new material.
